About Me
Michael and Rafi
Here is a brief “history of me,” to hold this space while I work on getting this website more fully together:
Professionally, I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1978, practiced in Colorado until 1998, with a 2 year break (1986-88) when I taught at the Anglo-European Chiropractic College in Bournemouth, UK. After returning to chiropractic in Colorado, I trained at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, while maintaining a part-time practice. I graduated in 1993, and integrated acupuncture into my practice.
In 1998, I started a long practice hiatus, moving to Missoula, MT to study Music-Thanatology, learning to provide musical bedside end-of-life comfort care, using harp and voice to deliver live “prescriptive music.” I moved to Portland, OR, in 2004. While continuing my chiropractic and acupuncture work for a while, I have predominantly done Music-Thanatology, which is deeply profound and moving work.
I have also gotten to play an amazing amount of “music for the living,” much of it at Jewish prayer services, but also lots of rock music at interfaith fund-raising events for hunger projects. Recently, I have created a body of “call and response” style Hebrew prayer. Please go to “Sounds of Sacred Light” to hear some of that. “Shadow Play” is an instrumental album I recorded a while back, using harp, guitar, bass and percussion.
In early 2020, just as the country was going into lockdown, my Wife Wendelin and I moved from Portland OR to Aiken SC. We are currently working part time in Wilmington NC, with the Therapeutic Musicians of Coastal Carolina.
